With My Needle and Pen—Volume 14, Issue 5
May 1, 2010

Dear Sampler Friends,
   Happy May Day!!
I hope that everyone had a great month!  Ours was busy and hectic with a trip to Chicago to visit our daughter and her family.  Right after we got home, Tom went to Florida to help out his parents after his father's brain surgery.  Things have now stabilized, and he is on his way home after 10 days.  We just hope that the weather cooperates so that he makes it home tonight.   In his absence, I've spent a lot of time with the L. Haworth sampler and am nearly finished.  I've also been busy getting the class kits ready for the Inn Stitches Spring Fling in a couple of weeks.
It was fun this month to get photos of the Acorn Sampler Sewing Case from Janet and Tedra and also photos of two past With My Needle and Pen SAL projects from Bethany.

2010 Group Stitch-Along Projects--May
L Haworth (The Marking Samplar) Stitch-Along
SAL leader--Darlene

Hi Everyone. I hope that y’all have started on Miss Lucy’s sampler. If you are having any trouble or have any questions, please feel free to contact me. E-Mail -
Darlene@themarkingsamplar.com, Phone - 865.690.7007
First, Some History for Lucy’s father:
Lucy’s father, James Haworth (b. 1751, d. 1837), was the son of Henry Haworth (b. 1721) and Elizabeth Topper (b. abt. 1723); the grandson of James Haworth (b. 1681/2, d. 1732) of Hapton Hall and his wife (and first cousin) Elizabeth Haworth (b/1688, d. 1738) of Bently Green; and the great-grandson of James Haworth (b. 1642, d.1684) of Rockliffe near Bacup, and his wife, Isabel (b. 1646, d. 1684 – note: Isabel married a second time and is buried under the name Isabel Ormerod). While there were Quaker Haworths in the north of England as early as 1660’s, this branch of the Haworth family seems to have become convinced Friends sometime after 1680.
Lucy’s father made his living as a conveyance, handling real property transactions and recording deeds for his clients. He was recorded as a minister by Marsden Monthly Meeting in 1787, the same year he married Martha Fawcett. According to Marsden Meeting’s testimony about his life and ministry, James was “led to use figurative language, drawing comparisons from outward things,” in his early appearances in the ministry, “which rendered this service the more trying to his natural will.” Later in his ministry, he was noted for his fervent prayer. James continued his religious service throughout his life, traveling extensively in the ministry and often hosting other ministers at his home. James Haworth died on June 27, 1837, at the age of 86, and was buried in the Friend’s burial ground in Marsden, Lancashire.

In the next newsletter, Lucy’s story will be continued with some history on Lucy’s Mother.

Stitching for the month of May 2010:
L Haworth’s sampler is completed totally in cross stitch. So, therefore, this sampler is very easy to stitch. The next two motifs that should be stitched are: • Row 2, second and third medallions. Plus, the letters E, J, H, H and F. I love both of these medallions. I do think that they would make wonderful Christmas ornaments as well.

Have you considered my suggestion of signing your sampler in December of this year? Yes, of course you will finish this sampler this year!!! I have faith that you will get it DONE!!! There has been a lot of conversation regarding signing a reproduction sampler after you have finished your stitching. I would like to suggest that you sign your sampler or any piece of needlework that you finish. For your L Haworth’s sampler, I would choose to sign at the bottom, about two threads out from a motif or the letter “D” that is in the right hand corner of this sampler. By signing in this manner, no one can easily alter your signature in the future. I highly recommend that you sign your samplers with your complete name, not merely your initials. Please, if you think that you might put your name in where L Haworth put hers, please use the current date on your sampler and not the year “1815.” I am sure that all of Ellen’s readers are well aware of this “signing convention”.

I wanted to say how much I am enjoying the L. Haworth SAL. I love getting every installment of the newsletter to read more of Darlene’s interesting info on the Ackworth school. I know lots of your readers have been there in person and while I tried twice to make it – I never was successful. So hearing about the school is always appreciated.
I did get started in March on schedule but it was the latter part of the month as I was waiting for a hank of NPI to arrive. I am working on the recommended linen but in 32ct because that is all I seemed to be able to get and I was on a wait list for 2 months to get that piece. I wasn’t going to complain about the count – I was just happy to get it and as Darlene said – it is lovely linen and perfect for this sampler. I am using 2 strands of NPI in the recommended 693.

I have really been enjoying working on the L. Haworth sampler.  I've discovered that I'm not a very good "rotation" stitcher, so I've been devoting most of my time to this sampler.
Here is a photo I took yesterday.    It is not a very good photo because I took it on my phone since Tom took our camera with him to Florida.  I have made more progress today and only have L. Haworth's name and the swan motif to stitch.

I'm going to compile all the notes from Darlene and put them in a plastic pocket on the back of the framed piece.

darbylogan@aol.com
Continue working the acorn border and also the inner bands (1-11).

Please email your progress reports and photos to either me at
darbylogan@aol.com  or to Ellen at ellen@withmyneedle.com so that  she can put them in the newsletter. Let us know what linen and threads you are using.   Ellen has also set up a photo album and a discussion board on the With My Needle facebook page
If you follow the monthly suggested stitching "schedule", you will complete the stitching in November an
d can assemble the pieces in December.  January 2011, we will present photos of completed pieces via the newsletter.

What a wonderful time I am having stitching the Acorn Sampler. I plan to make the sewing case and will add it to my collection of sewing cases and etuis. I am a retired nurse and having no difficulty keeping up with the stitching schedule. Just one of the perks of retirement. I am using 32 count Autumn Gold linen by Lakeside Linen as well as Weeks Dye Works and Sampler Threads by The Gentle Art. I have changed the color of some of the squirrels to black as we seem to have an unusually large number of black squirrels running around in our yard.
I have finished Ellen's A Needleworker's Sampler Huswif as well as the Colonial American Flag Huswif. When the Acorn Sampler Sewing Case is finished I will send a picture of all three together.

Here are a couple of shots of my sewing case and I've stitched the tiny scissor fob too.

Hello from Celle again. Now that spring is around the corner, I thought it is time to share an update on the status of the German Sampler Museum.
The Connemanns and the City of Celle are still in litigation, but the museum is open, now being run by the big museum in downtown Celle. Like always, the museum is still closed on Mondays and Fridays, but open the other five days of the week, thus including Saturdays and Sundays. Tours are still available. The phone number for arranging tours or asking questions is ++49 (0)5141 12372. Unfortunately I have to add some sad news here. After a short stay in the hospital, Hans-Joachim Connemann passed away rather unexpectedly a few days after Easter.
