Historic Reproduction Samplers
Rebecca Price, 1825 This chart is an accurate reproduction of Rebecca Price’s sampler that she stitched in 1825. I've researched Rebecca's genealogy starting with her great-great grandparents who immigrated from Wales to Pennsylvania in 1682. I've included a brief family history with the chart. Rebecca stitched her sampler when she was 8-years old. She used silk threads on an uneven-weave linen, 27 threads per inch horizontally x 34 threads per inch vertically. I stitched my model using Needlepoint, Inc. silk thread (DMC substitutions are provided) on 36-count linen from Weeks Dye Works, Inc. This made my model 8-inches wide x 7-3/8-inches high, which is slightly smaller than Rebecca’s original. If you want your sampler to be closer in size to Rebecca’s original, then I suggest you use 30- or 32-count linen. Stitch count: 143 wide x 132 high Stitches used: cross stitch over two linen threads, cross stitch over one linen thread, backstitch, and queen stitch. Stitch diagrams and detailed stitching directions are provided. If you like Rebecca Price's sampler, you might also like my original companion piece--click to see Rebecca's Flowers. |

Elizabeth Wood, 1822 This chart is an accurate reproduction of Elizabeth Wood’s sampler stitched in 1822. A photo of the antique sampler is included in the package. The antique sampler measures 13-3/4-inches wide by 17-1/4-inches high. Elizabeth stitched it with silk threads on uneven-weave linen of 32 threads per inch horizontally and 30 threads per inch vertically. I chose to stitch my reproduction on 35-count linen, which makes my model slightly smaller than Elizabeth’s original. I put my reproduction in an octagon-shaped frame like Elizabeth did. You might decide to do the same, or you could use a rectangular frame and hem the edges of the sampler or mount your sampler with an octagonal mat. The model was stitched using Needlepoint, Inc. silk thread on 35-count Cornstalk linen from Weeks Dye Works, Inc. making the stitched area 12-1/2 inches wide x 14-3/4 inches high. DMC substitutions are listed in the directions. Stitch count: 219 wide x 258 high Stitches used: The sampler is worked mainly in cross stitch over two linen threads. There is one horizontally elongated cross stitch on the border. In addition, backstitches over two linen threads are used around the eyes of some of the birds and the animals. Satin stitches are also used in a few places. Stitch diagrams are provided. |

Hannah Cummins, 1828
The model was stitched using Needlepoint Inc. silk thread on 35-count Straw linen from Weeks Dye Works, Inc. making the stitched area 9-5/8 inches wide by 13-3/4 inches high. DMC substitutions are provided for the silk threads. Stitch count: 168 stitches wide x 241 stitches high Stitches used: The sampler is worked mainly in cross stitch over two linen threads. There is one vertically elongated cross stitch in the verse and twelve cross stitches over one linen thread in the s in Cummins. Stitching directions, charts, and stitch diagrams are included. |

Ada Mary Hornsey, 1868 Ada Mary Hornsey of Wellingborough, England, stitched her sampler at age 10 on perforated paper, which was quite popular at the time. Her original sampler is 7-5/8 by 10 inches. The model was stitched using Needlepoint Inc. silk thread on 40-count Light Sand linen from Zweigart, Inc. making the stitched area 9-1/8 by 12 inches. This is slightly larger than Ada’s original. If you want your sampler to be as close as possible to the size of the antique, stitch it over two linen threads on 48-count linen. You can also stitch this reproduction on 18-count Aida or 22-count Hardanger. DMC substitutions are provided for the silk threads. Stitch count: 184 stitches wide x 238 stitches high Stitches used: cross stitch and straight stitches A photo of the antique sampler and research about Ada and her family are included. |

ES's Floral Sampler, ca. 1840 All we know about this
sampler are the stitcher's initials, ES. The sampler appears to be English
and, taking clues from the motifs, the linen, and the threads, was
stitched in the mid 19th century, most likely around 1840. Stitches used: cross stitch |

Caroline
Bevan,
1845
Caroline Bevan stitched her sampler in 1845 when she was 10 years old. We were not able to identify our specific Caroline Bevan because several girls with this name were born in 1834 and 1835 in Great Britain. Caroline stitched her sampler on a
linen 28 threads wide by 30 threads high.
The model was
stitched
on 28-count Amber linen from Wichelt,
Imports, Inc. using DMC embroidery thread. Stitches used: cross stitch, cross stitch over one thread, satin stitch, backstitch Stitch diagrams are provided. |

Rebecca's Flowers Rebecca Price’s 1825 sampler (also available, click here) inspired me to design Rebecca’s Flowers when I realized how lovely some of her motifs would be on a bobbin. You can also finish and frame your work or make a pillow or pincushion using any of the motifs. Charts are included for three slightly different sampler versions of various dimensions. Antique bobbins vary in size, so instructions guide you to match one of the charts with fabric of the necessary thread count so that your sampler will fit your bobbin. The bobbin used on the model is 8 inches tall. The bobbin barrel (rod) is 7-inches long and has a circumference of 5-3/8 inches, but bobbins of other dimensions can be used. You can use either linen or Aida if you are making a framed sampler or a pillow, but I recommend using linen if you want to attach your sampler to a bobbin. The model was stitched on 36-count Straw linen from Weeks Dye Works, Inc. using silk thread from Needlepoint, Inc. DMC substitutions are listed in the directions. Stitch counts: Stitches used: cross stitch. If attaching your sampler to a bobbin, you will also use eyelet and nun’s stitches. Stitch diagrams, detailed stitching directions, and bobbin assembly directions are provided. |

The model was stitched using Needlepoint, Inc. silk thread on 36-count Light Examplar linen from Lakeside Linens. The stitched area is 4-3/8-inches wide x 6-5/8-inches high. DMC substitutions are listed in the directions. Stitch count: 80 wide x 120 high Stitches used: backstitch, colonial knot, cross stitch, cross stitch over one linen thread, half stitch, satin stitch over two linen threads, straight stitch, and tent stitch. A Gift from Heaven I designed these two samplers to commemorate the births of my twin granddaughters, Katie (Kathryn) and Norah. I wanted each girl to have her own sampler that would be slightly different from her sister’s, but I wanted them to coordinate. The thread colors on both samplers are the same, but I changed the colors of some of the flowers on the border so there would be a subtle difference between the two samplers. I also changed the positions of the bees, ladybugs, small flowers and butterflies. The most noticeable difference is that the pictorial scenes on the samplers are mirror images. I’ve included charts for both samplers in this package. The models were stitched on 36-count Antique Ivory linen (#233) from Zweigart, Inc. using silk threads from Needlepoint, Inc. and Simply Wool thread from The Gentle Art. DMC substitutions are provided. Stitch count: 159 wide x 80 high Stitches used: backstitch, closed herringbone, cross stitch, cross stitch over one linen thread, satin, Smyrna cross, and tent stitch Stitch diagrams are provided. |

The models were stitched on 36-count Maritime White linen from Lakeside Linens & Designs, Inc. using silk threads from Needlepoint, Inc. DMC substitutions are provided. Stitch count: 73 wide x 73 high Stitches used: backstitch, cross stitch, cross stitch over one linen thread, satin stitch, and Smyrna cross Stitch diagrams and detailed stitching directions are provided. |

Mini Quaker Samplings Quaker Samplings began in 2006 as a pair of samplers, I and II. These samplers were very popular, and so I added Quaker Sampling III to this series. In Mini Quaker Samplings I add two more samplers, Quaker Sampling IV and V. The package contains charts for both. These samplers can be stitched entirely in cross stitch over two linen threads using one ply of embroidery thread. On each of my models, I decided to stitch the first letter of my first name using four-sided stitches to set it apart from the rest of the letters in the alphabet. I cross stitched everything else. These samplers can be stitched on linen or aida. The models were stitched using one ply of Brethren Blue Sampler Thread from The Gentle Art on 36-count Meadow Rue linen from Lakeside Linens, Inc. We suggest you buy 2, 5-yard skeins of overdyed thread if you want to stitch both samplers using one ply of thread like we did. Quaker Sampling IV. Stitch count: 73 wide x 93 high Quaker Sampling V. Stitch count: 103 wide x 102 high |

With A Pleasant Thought The inspiration for this original sampler was the lovely verse that I first saw on Alice Parr’s sampler, which is part of my sampler collection. When Alice stitched her sampler in 1825, she used the “long s”. It looks very similar to our modern day “f” except that the cross bar or nub is on the opposite side. I found the way Alice had stitched her verse to be charming, and I decided to replicate it on my sampler. Today, many people find it difficult to read text written with the long s, so I’ve also charted the verse with more familiar short s. Choose the version you like best. The model was stitched on 32-count Light Mocha linen from Zweigart , Inc. using Simply Wool threads from The Gentle Art. DMC substitutions are listed in the directions. Stitch count: 215 wide x 119 high Stitches used: backstitch, cross, half cross, four-sided, and straight stitch. Stitch diagrams are provided. |
Quaker Sampling III Quaker Sampling III,
like its predecessors, Quaker Sampling I and II, was inspired by
the samplers from Ackworth School, one of the most famous Quaker schools,
located in Yorkshire in northern England. In addition to the chart, the
package includes a
short essay on Ackworth School and its needlework. The model was stitched in cross stitch over two linen threads using one ply of Cranberry silk thread from Gloriana Threads on 36-count Maritime White linen from Lakeside Linens, Inc. I used two 6-yard skeins with no thread left over. I strongly recommend that you buy three 6-yard skeins to guarantee that you will have enough thread from the same dyelot. Gloriana threads have 12 plies per strand. Stitch count: 379 wide x 116 high Stitches used: cross stitch |

Words To Live
By This sampler was inspired by Fanny Lovett's sampler
of 1810. Like on Fanny's sampler, the verses on Virtue, Industry, and Friendship are the main focus on my adaptation. These familiar
verses are found on many old samplers, but usually not all three appear on
the same sampler. Some of the motifs on my adaptation on based on those
found on Fanny's sampler, but others are original. Stitches used: cross stitch, cross stitch over one linen thread, satin stitch, smyrna cross, and tent stitch. If desired, cross stitch can be substituted for many of these stitches. Stitch diagrams are provided. |

Blairgowrie This sampler takes its name from the
town of Blairgowrie, located in the region of Perthshire in the center of
Scotland. The town, with its red stone buildings, grew rapidly due
largely to the town's location on the banks of the River Ericht. In the
18th century the Blairgowrie area became a huge center for growing flax. It seems only fitting that this sampler,
which was created in the style reminiscent of old Scottish samplers,
should take its name from a Scottish town with such a rich textile
history. The model for this project
was stitched on 36-count Light Examplar from Lakeside
Linen and Designs, Inc. and uses Needlepoint Inc. silk threads. DMC substitutions are provided for the silk threads. Stitches used: cross stitch, alternating double cross, backstitch, closed herringbone, double running, four-sided, and smyrna cross. If desired, cross stitch can be substituted for the majority of these stitches Stitch diagrams are provided. |

Mrs. Waddelow's Huswif A huswif is a folded or rolled case for holding needlework supplies. My design was inspired by old ones, which were typically made from a variety of cotton prints, both on the inside and on the outside. The inside of my huswif is made from five different cotton prints. There are four pockets, three flat and one gathered, and three thread rings. The huswif outside is embroidered using only one color of overdyed cotton thread. A needlebook is also included. The model was stitched on 32-count Amber linen from Wichelt using Brick thread from Weeks Dye Works. Stitches used: backstitch and reversible cross stitch. If desired, you can use cross stitch instead of reversible cross stitch. Stitching directions, charts, stitch diagrams, and detailed assembly instructions are included. with the line, Come haste, my fair maiden, prepare for your worke ..... This verse was the inspiration for the name of the etui. The original book cover is silk, and the pages are canvas stitched with wool threads. For my adaptation, I used linen for the pages and stitched with overdyed silk threads. Stitches used: Algerian eye, backstitch, cross, double running, rice, and smyrna cross stitch Stitching directions, charts, stitch diagrams, and detailed assembly instructions are included. |

Flowers for Lily This sewing case was
inspired by an antique which was probably Shaker in origin. While the
antique has a bronzed leather exterior, I chose to use linen instead so that
embroidery could be added. The antique has a wool needlepage and a leather
pincushion on the inside. On the adaptation, I chose to use linen for both
the needlepage and the pincushion. The antique probably closed with ribbons
which are now missing. On my version, I used a pretty button and loop
closure. A scissors weight accompanies the sewing case. Stitching directions, charts, stitch diagrams, and detailed assembly instruction are included. |
